Pokémon TCG Pull Rates Explained: What to Expect From Every Box

One of the questions we hear most at 305 TCG Exchange: “What are my actual odds of pulling something good?” Great question — and the honest answer is that it depends on the product. Let’s break down pull rates in plain English so you know exactly what to expect every time you crack a pack.

Booster Packs: The Basics

Every modern Pokémon TCG booster pack contains 10 cards plus a basic Energy. In current Scarlet & Violet-era sets, you’re guaranteed at least one card of Rare rarity or higher in every pack — but the kind of rare varies wildly, from a standard holographic to a jaw-dropping special illustration rare.

What Can You Pull?

From rarest to most common, the hit ladder generally looks like this:

  • Special illustration rares & hyper rares — the chase cards; roughly 1 in every few dozen packs
  • Ultra rares (full arts, Pokémon ex) — around 1 in 6–12 packs depending on the set
  • Illustration rares — beautiful full-art commons/uncommons; roughly 1 in 10–15 packs
  • Standard holographics — at least one per pack in most modern sets

Booster Boxes vs. Elite Trainer Boxes

A booster box (36 packs) typically yields a satisfying spread of hits, often including several ultra rares and a real shot at a chase card. An Elite Trainer Box (9 packs) is a smaller sample — great for fun, but go in with measured expectations.

Our Honest Advice

Buy sealed product for the thrill, not as an investment strategy. Set a budget, enjoy the rip, and celebrate the hits when they come. And remember: every box we sell is factory-sealed and unweighed, so your odds are exactly what the manufacturer intended.
