This magic ruler booster box is a factory-sealed 1st Edition display of Magic Ruler, the North American print of set code MRL. Konami released the set in North America on September 16, 2002, so it stands among the earliest Core Boosters in the TCG. This listing is the 24-pack hobby format, and each pack then holds 9 cards. Magic Ruler is also the set that introduced Ritual Monsters, Quick-Play Spells, and Toon monsters to the game.
The chases in a magic ruler booster box
Relinquished fronts the box as the cover card, and its Ritual Spell changed how the game played. Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon (MRL-000) and Serpent Night Dragon (MRL-103) hold the two Secret Rare slots, however, so they lead most chase lists. Delinquent Duo, Snatch Steal, Mystical Space Typhoon, Painful Choice, and Cyber Jar anchor the rest. Konami’s official card database still lists the full North American MRL card pool for reference.
One set, two names
The North American set holds 104 cards: 65 Common, 17 Rare, 10 Super Rare, 10 Ultra Rare, and 2 Secret Rare. Konami later renamed the set Spell Ruler, after Magic Cards became Spell Cards. North American Spell Ruler-labelled boxes are Unlimited only, though, so a 1st Edition box from this side of the Atlantic carries the Magic Ruler name. On the cards, the “1st Edition” stamp sits centre-left while the MRL abbreviation sits centre-right. Browse our sealed products for more early sealed displays.

Frequently Asked
Why does a magic ruler booster box matter to early-set collectors?
It is a 1st Edition display of the third early international Core Booster, and it introduced Ritual, Quick-Play, and Toon cards. Its two Secret Rares still anchor early master sets.
Is Magic Ruler the same set as Spell Ruler?
Yes, with one print difference. Konami renamed the set Spell Ruler later, but North American Spell Ruler boxes are Unlimited only; the North American 1st Edition print is branded Magic Ruler.
